The West coast has a rich history which we love to share and which is preserved with great dedication for future generations. Much of the area is protected by legislation to ensure this legacy.
St Helena Bay was discovered by Vasco Da Gama in 1947. At this time the area was inhabited by the Khoikoi tribe. Vasco proceeded to trade goods for the tribe’s cattle and sheep.
This period in history is depicted at the Vasco De Gama museum in Shelly Point. This museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to this courageous explorer.
